Aftercare Steps
- Keep your pet calm and confined in a small, quiet area for the first 24 hours after surgery.

- Excessive swelling, redness, or heat around the incision site.
- Discharge (pus, blood, or foul-smelling fluid) from the incision.
- Opening or separation of the incision edges.
- Lethargy or refusal to eat lasting more than 24 hours post-surgery.
- Vomiting or diarrhea persisting beyond the first 12 hours.
- Pale gums, labored breathing, or collapse.
Activity Restrictions
- No running, jumping, or rough play for 10-14 days.
- Leash walks only for bathroom breaks — no off-leash activity.
- No climbing stairs unsupervised; carry small dogs up and down stairs.
- Avoid dog parks, daycare, and interaction with other animals until cleared.
- No bathing or swimming until the incision is fully healed.
Medication Notes
- Give pain medication as prescribed for the first 3-5 days. Do not skip doses even if your pet seems comfortable.
- Administer antibiotics (if prescribed) for the full course, even if your pet appears to be healing well.
- Do not give human medications (ibuprofen, acetaminophen, aspirin) as these are toxic to dogs.
- Contact the clinic if your pet vomits within 30 minutes of taking medication.
Follow-Up Timeline
Recheck in 10-14 days for suture removal and incision evaluation. Contact the clinic sooner if any warning signs develop.
Dietary Notes
Offer a small, bland meal (boiled chicken and rice) the evening of surgery. Resume normal diet the following day. Avoid treats and rich foods for the first 48 hours to reduce the risk of stomach upset from anesthesia.
